A little more Bushido – Taka and Wrath.

Welcome friends! As I sit and write, I can’t quite get my head round that we are already two thirds the way through January! The last several weeks have been somewhat of a whirlwind with the holidays, family coming in from overseas and the onset of a frigid winter. While we have retired to winter quarters for the cold months, I’ve had little time for picking up a brush. I don’t know about any of you lot, but if I don’t get at least a couple hours a week at the painting table, I get cranky.

Kill Team narrative

Greetings all! A friend of mine is dipping his toe into the turbulent universe of 40K, and wanted to try out Kill Team to get a feel for it. His army of choice is Orks, and I thought this would be a good way to get things rolling with my Death Guard. So to that end, I wrote up a quick opening narrative to set the stage. Here goes:

It was a miserable day. The low-hanging purple-hued clouds were raining down, the acidic rain leaving a slightly bitter tang in the air, akin to ozone. The mud was thick and cloying, sucking at the slow, deliberate footfalls which would have sent a lesser man sprawling. Here and there the mud changed color due to gouts of ichor that had been spilled. Occasionally a hand or a torso could be spotted. The buzzing of the flies was noticeable and threatened to drown out the downpour of the acid rain.

Craters pock-marked the ground, sulphuric vapor hung heavy across the scene of carnage as though trying to veil the bloodbath that had occurred just moments before. The scene looked almost surreal, like one of the expressionist paintings that were created on Terra centuries ago. A feverish, nightmarish vision of ‘hell’.

“hell…” a voice mused.

There followed a wet, rasping noise from the vox grille, which was evidently laughter, but sounding more like a sickly gurgle from mucous thick lungs.

“It appears that the greenskins have dug in and think they can deny us what is rightfully ours. They are stubborn, but they will fall as though wheat before the scythe. We must show them the price of their misjudgment”

Vanis Bubonicus stepped up onto the crest of a rocky outcrop and surveyed the area before him. Across the mired landscape he could see the citadel which contained what they had come for: forbidden xenos technology that had been vaulted by the loyalist Mechanicum. A vanguard of Orks had intercepted their data scans and had also made planetfall in an attempt to take the artifacts for themselves. Brutish they may be, but it belied the cunning beneath, something which Vanis both admired and loathed. To underestimate the greenskins meant death.

Vanis half turned his head to his second in command, Lothar the Impure, who stood seven paces behind him.

“We press the assault brother, let us take the artifacts and lay waste to our enemies. Determined and methodical, as our gene father taught us”

“As you wish my lord” replied Lothar before turning away to relay the orders to the squad.

Vanis tilted his head slightly, as though listening to words only he could hear. The unnatural horns protruding from his helm making his visage look like that of a daemon prince. As the squad of Death Guard walked up the incline toward their leader, they saw him gesture with his hand, and with that the droning of flies became louder. Suddenly they were surrounded by obscene flying insects, a cloud of bloated thoraxes and proboscis’, a living, flying death. The nurglings that clung to Vanis’ armor squealed with delight. Another gesture from Vanis’ hand and the cloud of flies surged forward, down from their position toward the Ork lines.

Vanis turned to his squad and spoke. A voice like crushed granite addressed them.

“Onward, my brothers. Today we bring the gifts of Plaguefather Nurgle to this planet, let us make him proud of our victory. Onward my brothers, to the citadel and to our prize. Let none stand in our way. Onward, for Mortarion and for the Plaguefather!”

Bushido Throwdown – Ito Clan vs. Cult of Yurei

Hello all! Welcome back 😉

Last week I visited my FLGS, Grognard Games, to meet up with my buddy Greg to play second ever game of Bushido. Since my last game, I had constructed a board to play games over, so this was a great opportunity to try it out!

Score! Some retro GW figures – Cheap!

A chance visit to my local Half Price Books yielded an awesome result a week or so ago. Sitting out in the open was this little beauty:

Pew pew!

Of course I swooped on it, especially for a mere $10! I wanted a set of these to paint up and possibly use in Judge Dredd as Juvies or something. It was a complete set too! I love finding some of the older stuff out in the wild still. The thrill of the hunt! (Even though I wasn’t on ‘the hunt’ that day).

Behold!

So I’m considering picking up the new Necromunda, I really like the new Escher minis and I’m really liking the small scale skirmish games GW is finally embracing (again. It took how long for them to realize?). What’s everyone’s thoughts on it? Should I get it, or would I be better off picking up Kill Team?

Cheers!

More Infinity Miniatures Finished!

Just completed three more figures for my PanOceanean forces for Infinity – a Svalarheima Nisse with sniper rifle, a Nisse with HMG and an Akali Sikh drop trooper. As with my Fusiliers I painted a little while back, the basis of the paint job on these was to look good from three feet away, as I want a fully painted force on the table in a relatively short time.

They mean business.

The HMG Nisse is an older model, but she’s beautifully sculpted and the animation in the pose is just great. The sculpt on the back of the leather jacket is superb. So much so, I forgot to take a picture! Really loving the anime vibe of this game, and I think it translates into the slightly brighter palette that I’ve been using for them.

Core team shot:

Suppressing an uprising near you!

Very happy with the overall look so far. I’ve got bunches of other miniatures to add to the force, so expect to see some more being added soon.

Lastly, a big THANK YOU to all who partook in the voting for the Horus Project poll. The option for the white ceremonial armor didn’t event get one vote, and ironically both the black armor option and the Sons of Horus colors ended up in a tie… ARGH! So, to that end, I’ll ask Superherobossladywife tonight which she likes and that will be the deciding vote….

Cheers all!

The Horus Project – An International Hobby Quest

“It does not matter how the galaxy burns, only that it does”.

“Warmaster – that is what it means, my brother. The strength to do what must be done.”

Welcome back, friends! This post sees the beginning of a long(ish)-term project between me and my good friend Matt. After exchanging several text messages through WhatsApp a couple of weeks ago, we decided upon a painting thing we could do together, and so The Horus Project was born.

Reaper Bones Naga, and my first game of Bushido

Welcome all, on this rainy, dark, and somewhat humid July afternoon. After my last session of D&D, I felt compelled to paint up one of my many Reaper miniatures. Now, I’m a little on the fence with the Reaper stuff. Some of the larger models look great, and the price point vs their metal counterparts sure makes it an attractive prospect to be able to pick up some great models without breaking the bank. I feel that some of the smaller miniatures suffer (a little bit) with the translation from the metal to the plastic, but again, It can be overlooked as you’re generally only going to be buying singles for characters or for beasties to populate your dungeon with.

More Deepwars minis completed!

Another couple of strikes from the D20 painting spreadsheet I posted a little while back!

First up was the Recon Trooper from the Fortune Hunters faction. I love all the Deepwars minis, although I will admit that one or two do have some little things that grate on me a little, and this guy is an example of that. A really nice miniature in and of itself, but the scale of this guy is way out of whack with some of the other figures in the faction. If this guy was standing up, he’d be more than a head and shoulders taller than some of his fellow hunters!

Anyway, I digress, this figure is the first mini I’ve painted from this faction:

I love the animation of the miniature here, and it really lends itself well to making you think he’s swimming in some uncharted depths, looking for some precious ether crystals. I believe he’s wearing some kind of propulsion pack on his back, which I’m assuming may grant him some ability in the game (I haven’t had chance to read up on him yet).

Next up: a Dark Mariner Vanguard marine. I really dig the designs of this faction, a mish-mash of crustacean armor with lots of Cthuluesque gribbly bits. Quite sinister with their tentacles squirming out from behind armor plates and cold eyes staring at you from within the darkened eye slits of plumed helmets.

I had to repair this guys weapon as when he arrived the upper portion of his halberd had snapped off, just below the *ahem* glowing balls. I received a second one of these in one of the starter sets, and it looks as though the same thing may be about to happen with that one as well. A friendly note to the folks at Antimatter Games – maybe throw in a bit of extra padding for this particular miniature, it’s way too nice a piece not to go that extra mile with packing!!

This now enables me to field a playable force for Deepwars, as I have 5 figures that I can take to the table with. Once I have a playable second faction, I can start running some demo games and get in on the Seadog program 😉

For the next selection on the D20 list, the wifey rolled 18… a Kamau hacker for Infinity. I’ll start that one in a couple of days,  as there are a couple of other projects I need to wrap up.

Oh, and then this happened…

More to come…

Ikiryo – Geisha of Yurei

Hello fiends! As I sit here with the tempestuous skies closing in on Chicago, and the tumultuous rumblings of thunder, what better to get into the spirit than to post up my newly completed Ikiryo, one of the miniatures from the Cult of Yurei starter set for Bushido?

I have to say, that I’m really excited about the prospect of getting a painted warband for Bushido. Each of these miniatures has a lot of personality, and I’ll confess that more than once while I was painting Ikiryo, I wondered what her story was. On a whim, this was what popped in my head:

“Many nights she wonders alone with her thoughts, lamenting the day she gave herself to the Cult of Yurei. With each passing Autumn she loses a little more of what humanity she had left. Ikiryo serves a different master now.”

Now while the Bushido rule book is rich with background of the Jwar Isles, and of the different factions overall stories, there’s no actual details of the individual characters. I suppose this is a good and a bad thing, good if you want to create your own narrative for the characters, bad if you don’t, and would be happy using the supplied ‘fluff’. Your mileage may vary.

All that aside, I agonized for a while on what colors to use. I decided to keep the palette limited, with two main colors – jade and another whose name escapes me right now, but a very complimentary pink color.

Autumnal leaves succumb to frost…

I did toy with the idea of putting a pattern on her kimono, but decided against it, and opted for simplicity, and just going for a design on her parasol instead. I made her face slightly paler than the rest of her skin, as a sort of ‘it could be makeup or could be a mask’ feel, emphasizing the facial wounds and stitches. I painted the eyes completely over with a pale blue, and highlights white to give that supernatural feel to her.

I love that the miniature and the posing is so demure, but looking at her face you know that she is quite possibly terrifying to be up against on the field.

A few moments of tomfoolery on my phone and I added some fog for atmosphere:

Within the fog she waits…

Completing Ikiryo also knocked another dent in my D20 painting table. I also painted up a Deep Wars figured as well from the table, but haven’t had chance to get any pictures yet. Stay tuned, and thanks, as always, for reading!

Terraforming – Bushido style

I was in Chinatown over the weekend with the family, and I picked up a handful of the little red Buddha figurines, thinking that they may work quite well as objectives or just straight up scenery for Bushido.

A mere $6 later and i’d picked up these little fellas. I washed them in warm soapy water and then based them up with some cork and MDF bases I had kicking around:

After the glue had dried, I textured the base with some modelling pumice and left overnight to dry (I prefer using this than the PVA/sand option, as I feel this has more resilience).

A quick blast with some grey car primer and a wash with some Agrax Earthshade, then random washes of the GW green wash (forgot the name!) and we’re on the way:

I used a splash of green to simulate the weathering and discoloration of stone through being left out in the elements. I didn’t want to get too crazy with the paint job on these, just something quick and easy. I grabbed a couple of different shades of grey and drybrushed the little fella, followed up with a last light drybrush of white.

After painting the soil and drybrushing that up too, I hit the base up with some static grass and added some flowers, and voila! a quick piece of terrain to dress my Bushido board. I’ve put my Cult of Yurei Ikiryo figure next to it for size comparison. I didn’t want a huge statue, just something that could be like a roadside shrine or something.

I can’t wait to get the Bushido board finished!

Cheers!
